The Cheek-Hung Up

song dissection

When I first dwelled on 'the cheek' they were known as cheeky and the nosebleeds a rather messy name to be fair, their songs seemed just like any other indie/pop/forward Holloways wannabe band. In addition to this the use of the word nosebleed in the name put me off wanting to dive deeper. This is a case of name failure I think because the title was sickly, meaning one would rather not touch it, however good the song was. Now they have renamed and moved on. A simple moulded name has risen from the ashes of a blood stained tissue. The band have taken a mature new direction which is great as this song(a previous single)is super mellow, the undertone of a broody 20 something comes out in full force. He is strained I love it. The husky guitars clash and the chorus is mixed in almost, not forced a story is told. To many it may seem like the cheek want to be something they are not. Just another homeless band in the city of musical fame. Yet that is far from the case, if given airplay/ promotion..., things may change. 'In just one night' is another example of super forward indie; I feel a wave of freshness has cascaded down the feeble track of guitar music. In its place stands THE CHEEK.

4/5 stars.
